There are a lot of poems in the haiku section here at DA. But only a few capture the truth of the form as it was meant to be -- simple, concrete, elegant. Virtually everything that saiun has posted since joining would fall nicely under that heading, and with good reason; he's studied the masters. Read all of his work, but start with Solitary Blackbird. Field Trip
Stella had never been on a field trip before. Nothing fun like that ever happened at P.S. 103. Most days Stella’s school tablet sat untouched on her desk as she stared out the window, watching the usual red dust tumble over the horizon. But as she walked into class, she noticed a strange lady standing where Ms. Juno was supposed to be. This lady had a tight smile and looked funny. Not ugly or anything. Just too fancy for a Martian school in the boonies. More like a Starship Lady.

Celestial
The stars are within us;
Their light still glowing brightly -
in the interconnections
of the elements they've birthed.

The eyes of the stars, sparkling,
in delight at our antics.
And I would chuckle and say,

On the horizon is the imminent retardation of your country or nation
Because everyone is glued to the tv, their phone, or can't turn of their Playstation
They call it fun and "social" interaction
But it's only an addiction to distraction, for endless shortlived satisfaction
When someone gets hurt or dies, people whip out their phone, not to call in the emergency
But only for their warped sence of urgency
To "share" what they see instead of helping those in need
Yes, people are so very social indeed...
Put it on Facebook, tweet it away
But in that social disarray, haven't they just given their humanity away?
The magical "social" place that is

I was driving home and spied this scene out my car window. I actually wanted to include other details, as there were some lovely purple and sunburst yellow flowers, and some dark brown weeds that really set the green and gold off. But alas, couldn't fit it into 5/7/5. Oh, also, it's a red-winged blackbird, one of my favorites. The whole scene reminded me of peaceful solitude. Very cool!
